Kicking Asphalt

In case you all were wondering...Yes, I am nutty enough for the Nut Job Challenge.

I decided to do the 5K the day before the Half Marathon. Now I will get not one, but two medals! Woo, race swag!

I'm also crazy enough to run on my typical rest day. Last night after a rough work week, I put on my running shoes and hit the old neighborhood route. It was lovely out and I had a tough week. I desperately needed a short run to get the endorphins flowing! I didn't want to do the treadmill, I didn't want to do the trail. I went straight to the asphalt.

I have not run on a road in weeks so I was completely unprepared on how weird it would feel. I expected it would be similar to my treadmill or the trail, absorbing most of the impact. Asphalt is not nearly as forgiving on your joints though. No wonder my legs were always getting messed up! I did have good reason for choosing my route. Most of my upcoming races are going to be on asphalt and I don't want my body to become foreign to it. I'm going to try to do a road run at least once a week just until I get my next 3 races completed.

I only did 3.72 miles, but I kicked ass! I did it in 31:25.  Gotta get speedy for the 5k :)

Ever run on a planned rest day because of lovely weather or a bad day?

Do you road run? If not, do you try to prep yourself for races that are primarily on asphalt?

What's your best 5k time?
Mine was chipped at 25:55

  1. Glad you decided to do both races! I have never done two, races in a weekend, but always thought it sounded fun! I have to mix up my running surfaces too! I like the combo though. Keeps it interesting.
